The short answer: our tallow soap is made with grass-fed tallow we render ourselves, in small batches, from beef fat from a local Texas ranch. Raised in Texas, rendered with intention.
Where it comes from
We buy beef fat from a local ranch near College Station.
Tallow is a byproduct of raising cattle for meat. I'd rather render it and put it to use than see it thrown away, and I'd rather buy it from people I can drive to.
What rendering in house means
The fat is melted slowly and strained until only clean tallow is left. Doing it ourselves means I know where every batch came from and how it was handled. It's more work than opening a pail, and it's the part I most wanted in our own hands.
Why it matters in soap
Tallow is most of the bar. It's what makes it hard, long-lasting and creamy. Read how our hot-process soap is made.
What about the rest of our products?
Our other products use grass-fed tallow from a supplier we trust. A few older soap batches, Bourbon Oak, Spiced Orchard and Stout & Oak, were made before the switch.
